Religious Education

Dear Parents/Guardians,

St. Mary Parish is blessed to welcome your family to Religious Education (RE) for 2018-2019!

The following registration form and payment (by bank routing number or credit card) is to be completed by June 1st.  You will receive a confirmation letting you know your registration is complete.  If you do not receive a confirmation your registration was not processed.

Each family MUST re-register yearly. The Family Registration Material is used to place students in classes, procure a sufficient number of catechists, and order textbooks and bibles. We try to set a maximum number of 16 students per class for grades K-8. Placement will be determined on a “first come, first serve” basis as registration forms are returned with payment. Applications will be processed once this form is completed and payment is made. Since we offer so many different days and times to try to accommodate families and schedules, we ask you to make RE a priority and work all other events and schedules around the RE day and time that you choose. The deadline for switching days will be August 27, 2018. After this date, there will be a $25.00 fee for any changes.

**New Class times and days-

Kindergarten: Tuesday 4:30-5:45 p.m. or Sunday 9:30-10:45 a.m.

Grades 1-6: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 4:30-5:45 p.m. or Sunday 9:30-10:45 a.m.

Grades 7-8: Tuesday, Wednesday 6:45-8:00 p.m. or Thursday 4:30-5:45 p.m.

RE Classes do not take the place of Sunday Mass attendance.  Our Mass times are Saturday 5:00 p.m., Sunday 8:00 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 11:00 a.m., or 6:00 p.m.

All RE Classes are held in the school building.

You will receive an email the week of August 6th with the day/time/classroom number (s)/catechist name (s) of your child(ren)’s class(es) based on the 1st and 2nd choices you indicate on your completed registration form.

Classes begin in September and go until May.  The exact dates for class sessions, breaks, special events, etc. will be listed in the Family Handbook you receive at the Opening Mass of the year held on Sunday, September 9, 2018 at 11:00 a.m.  You will have the opportunity to meet your child's catechist and find your child's classroom.  We will also have an ice cream social.  Child(ren)'s textbooks, bibles, and folders will be handed out during their first RE class in their classroom.

New Families interested in the Religious Education program must be registered parishioners. We will also need a copy of your child’s baptismal certificate when registering.

If you are registering a child for Second grade who has not gone to First grade, they will be put in a First grade classroom.  A child must complete First grade before receiving the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Eucharist in Second grade.

Our classes for children with special needs, the REACH program, meet on Sundays from 9:30-10:45 am.  If you have a child with special needs there are a different set of registration papers you will need to fill out.  Please call the RE Office to obtain these.

We are past the early registration deadline.  The fee for the remainder of this year is $330 for 1 child, $430 for 2 children, and $505 for 3 or more children. The Kindergarten fee is $65. There is a First Reconciliation/First Eucharist Fee of $50 for 2nd Grade students, and a $50 Confirmation Fee for 8th Grade students.  Catechists will have their tuition waived (though still need to pay for sacrament fees).

If you are in need of financial assistance, please contact us to discuss handling the financial concern. No child will be denied placement in the program because of financial hardship. Please do not wait to call us.

As always, the offering of any class remains contingent upon having a catechist for the class.  A person who feels called to serve as a catechist needs to be 18 or older.  We do try to have at least one assistant for every catechist.  Assistants can be any age.  It has been a long tradition at St. Mary that our parish family has offered their time and talents. It is through caring, sharing, and praying, that our community has grown in love and support of one another. The RE program could not exist without the efforts of our wonderful, dedicated volunteers. The opportunity to be a catechist, assistant, substitute, or volunteer in many other areas where the RE program needs assistance, is described and offered on our website. We ask that you please look at the volunteer form and consider offering your services.    All volunteers 18 and over are required to complete a background check and attend Protecting God's Children.  Thank You!

In his 1994 Letter to Families, Saint Pope John Paul II wrote, “Parents are the first and most important educators of their own children….” The role and duty of the parent in your child’s faith formation is simply irreplaceable. Our Religious Education program is designed to aid parents in fulfilling their role as the primary educators of their children. The catechists co-partner with you in this responsibility by supporting your role and reinforcing what the children are learning at home. Please make sure that your child/ren attend Mass every weekend and on holy days of obligation, fill out the weekly Mass Reflection forms, are here for every session, arrive on time, stay for the entire class, complete all assignments, study for all exams, and learn all the necessary prayers for their grade level.

Your cooperation in promptly registering is greatly appreciated! We thank you and look forward to sharing our faith with you and your child/ren in the coming program year. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact the Religious Education Office at 708-326-9350.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Ms. Nicole Brochmann
