Council of Catholic Women

MISSION STATEMENT

St. Mary Council of Catholic Women, under the guidance of Our Lady of Good Counsel, seeks to support, empower and educate its members in spirituality, leadership and service. The Council of Catholic Women (CCW) programs respond with Gospel values to the needs of the Church and society in the modern world.

President's Welcome

St. Mary Council of Catholic Women (CCW) invites all women of the parish to join our organization.  We are dedicated to Our Lady of Good Counsel.  With her help, we offer members opportunities to grow in spirituality by serving the parish and community, praying together, engaging in meaningful programs, and sharing fellowship.

Meetings include educational speakers.  Sponsored activities include collecting clothing and toiletries for Daybreak, awarding high school scholarships, and donating to seminarians.  Opportunities to create prayer shawls for those in need of comfort are enjoyed by those who do needlework.  We help Birthright and Rachel’s Vineyard with fall and spring donations.  We engage residents of Frankfort Terrace Nursing Home with Christmas music and bingo.

We celebrate Mass together as a group twice each year. In November we honor our deceased members.  We gather to celebrate Mass on the feast of Our Lady of Good Counsel, and ask for her constant protection. All meetings include prayer, programs, refreshment, conversation and fun.

As president of the CCW for 2018-2020, I invite you to join our Council. If you are a member, I welcome you back. We meet the third Thursday of each month between September and May. Please note that we have changed our meeting start time to 6:30 p.m.  Please see our calendar below.

If you are interested in learning who we are and what we do, please come to a meeting. We would love to meet you. Enrollment is open year round.

A closer look at a ministry we help sponsor…

Prayer Shawl Ministry

About the shawls

The prayer shawl ministry began when a parishioner was diagnosed with cancer. An out pouring of love for this parishioner and others with cancer gave rise to the prayer shawl ministry. Since those early days the ministry has expanded to offer handmade knitted and crocheted shawls to those experiencing chronic conditions, those undergoing medical procedures, or anyone grieving a loss or undergoing challenges.

The dedication in the prayer shawl manual states: “May the work of our hands in creating these shawls be a visible sign of a ‘HUG FROM GOD’ to those in need.” Members of this ministry meet monthly to pray the rosary and prayers of petition while knitting or crocheting shawls. In this way prayers become woven into the fabric of the shawl.

If you are interested in joining this special ministry, we meet the first Monday of the month (except when a holiday falls on a Monday) in the Church Hall from 9:00-11:00 a.m. Please check the bulletin.

Gifting the shawls

The gifting of prayer shawls is key to the spirit of this ministry.

Do you have a loved one who would benefit from receiving a shawl? Over the years families have recounted stories of how loved ones were comforted by the reception of a prayer shawl. Knowing that shawls were created out of love and concern for them gave many recipients peace and strength. These shawls truly are a “hug from God”.

Shawls come in a variety of colors for men, women, and children.  While there is no cost for a shawl, free will donations are gratefully accepted to help this ministry continue. St. Mary CCW also supports this ministry as needed.

A parishioner may request a shawl by contacting the parish secretary. Enter door #3.

OUR LADY OF GOOD COUNSEL

We begin our meetings with the following prayer to our Mother Mary under the title of Our Lady of Good Counsel.

Prayer to Our Lady of Good Counsel

God of heavenly wisdom, you have given to us Mary Mother of Jesus to be our guide and counselor. Grant that we may always seek her motherly help in this life and so enjoy her blessed presence in the life to come.

O Mother of Good Counsel, Patroness of the National Council of Catholic Women, intercede for us that we may be wise, courageous, and loving leaders of the Church.

Help us, dear Mother to know the mind of Jesus, your son.

May the Holy Spirit fill us with reverence for God’s creation and compassion for all God’s children.

May our labors of love on earth enhance the reign of God and may God’s gifts of faith and living hope prepare us for the fullness of the world to come. Amen
