Council of Catholic Women

MISSION STATEMENT

St. Mary Council of Catholic Women, under the guidance of Our Lady of Good Counsel, seeks to support, empower and educate its members in spirituality, leadership and service. The Council of Catholic Women (CCW) programs respond with Gospel values to the needs of the Church and society in the modern world.

Welcome

St. Mary Council of Catholic Women (CCW) is dedicated to Our Lady of Good Counsel. With her help we offer our members opportunities to serve the parish and community, pray together, and share fellowship.

We sponsor a collection for Daybreak, scholarships for the 8th graders, and we have adopted a seminarian. We accept donations for Birthright and Rachael’s Vineyard Retreats by offering lapel roses in October and carnations in May. We entertain the residents of Frankfort Terrace Nursing Home with a bingo party in the Fall and Spring. At Christmas time, we delight the residents with treats at a caroling party.

During Lent we walk with Mary as we pray the Marian Stations of the Cross. As a Council we celebrate Mass together at the beginning and middle of the year. In November we remember our deceased members at Mass. On the feast of Our Lady of Good Counsel we attend Mass petitioning our Mother for her continual protection. Of course, at meetings there is a time for refreshments and fellowship.

As president of the Council of Catholic Women, I invite all women of the parish to join us. We meet the third Thursday of the month from September through May. See the calendar below.

If you are interested in joining CCW, please come to a meeting. Enrollment is open year round.

A closer look at a ministry we help sponsor…

Prayer Shawl Ministry

About the shawls

The prayer shawl ministry began when a parishioner was diagnosed with cancer. An out pouring of love for this parishioner and others with cancer gave rise to the prayer shawl ministry. Since those early days the ministry has expanded to offer handmade knitted and crocheted shawls to those experiencing chronic conditions, those undergoing medical procedures, or anyone grieving a loss or undergoing challenges.

The dedication in the prayer shawl manual states: “May the work of our hands in creating these shawls be a visible sign of a ‘HUG FROM GOD’ to those in need.” Members of this ministry meet monthly to pray the rosary and prayers of petition while knitting or crocheting shawls. In this way prayers become woven into the fabric of the shawl.

If you are interested in joining this special ministry, we meet the first Monday of the month (except when a holiday falls on a Monday) in the Church Hall from 9:00-11:00 a.m. Please check the bulletin.

Gifting the shawls

The gifting of prayer shawls is key to the spirit of this ministry.

Do you have a loved one who would benefit from receiving a shawl? Over the years families have recounted stories of how loved ones were comforted by the reception of a prayer shawl. Knowing that shawls were created out of love and concern for them gave many recipients peace and strength. These shawls truly are a “hug from God”.

Shawls come in a variety of colors for men, women, and children.  While there is no cost for a shawl, free will donations are gratefully accepted to help this ministry continue. St. Mary CCW also supports this ministry as needed.

A parishioner may request a shawl by contacting the parish secretary. Enter door #3.

OUR LADY OF GOOD COUNSEL

We begin our meetings with the following prayer to our Mother Mary under the title of Our Lady of Good Counsel.

Prayer to Our Lady of Good Counsel

God of heavenly wisdom, you have given to us Mary Mother of Jesus to be our guide and counselor. Grant that we may always seek her motherly help in this life and so enjoy her blessed presence in the life to come.

O Mother of Good Counsel, Patroness of the National Council of Catholic Women, intercede for us that we may be wise, courageous, and loving leaders of the Church.

Help us, dear Mother to know the mind of Jesus, your son.

May the Holy Spirit fill us with reverence for God’s creation and compassion for all God’s children.

May our labors of love on earth enhance the reign of God and may God’s gifts of faith and living hope prepare us for the fullness of the world to come. Amen
